Using Exchange 2007
Applications Recommended to Access Exchange 2007
- Microsoft Outlook 2007 is recommended for use with Microsoft Windows based computers.
- Outlook 2007 is not necessary for Exchange 2007; however, some Exchange 2007 functionality will not be available
when using Outlook 2003.
- Exchange 2007 subscribers will be responsible for all Exchange Client Access licenses (CALs). Required CALs are
still to be determined, but they will be required at the start of fiscal year 2009 (July 1, 2008). You will have the
option of purchasing these through either your own Microsoft campus agreement or through Central Stores Select.
- Outlook is no longer provided by Microsoft as part of the Exchange licensing cost. If you wish to use Outlook 2007
to connect to the Exchange 2007 server, you will need to purchase the license.
- Microsoft Entourage 2008 is recommended for use with Macintosh OS X. This application supports nearly all the same
features as the Windows application. This application is part of the Microsoft Office Suite for Macintosh OS X.
- Any IMAP-compatible email reader, such as Eudora and Thunderbird, can be used to access mailboxes and email folders.
- Access through a Web browser is also supported. Internet Explorer is the recommended Web browser for Exchange,
because it implements most of the features available in Outlook.
- Access through a Windows Mobile or BlackBerry handheld device is also supported via Exchange ActiveSync and Blackberry Enterprise Service (BES).
*Recommendation: Update to the current version of Microsoft Outlook 2007, Microsoft Outlook 2003, and/or Microsoft Entourage 2004.

Security: Virus and Spam Screening
The Exchange 2007 system uses the UIUC campus Active Directory system for authentication and to ensure messaging and collaboration security.
Additionally, Exchange Services uses CITES Spam Control (CSC) for filtering of spam. The Exchange 2007 system implementation of CSC contains the following details:
- All new Exchange subscribers will have their CSC setting placed in the "Cautious" mode if they hadn't already
subscribed to CSC.CSC sill also be configured to send them a quarantine digest list. If a new Exchange
user already subscribes to CSC, then the CSC settings will not change.
- Exchange subscribers will be able to set their CSC setting to any of the available modes.
- Exchange subscribers will need to use the CSC processes for retrieval of filtered mail.
- Resource mailboxes and public folders may be associated with the requestors
NetID and use that persons CSC setting for filtering. For more information contact the Exchange Services team.
- For more information on CSC, see http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/antispam/overview.html.
Exchange-Specific Filter Settings
Mail sent to the Exchange server can still be filtered within Exchange because of anti-virus reasons.
Incoming and outgoing messages are filtered if they contain an attachment with the following names and/or extensions:
*.exe, *.pif, *.scr, *.cmd, *.bat, *.com, *.hta, *.cpl, *.vbs
Additionally, attached ZIP files that contain files with any of the above extensions or filenames will have those files stripped from within the ZIP file and replaced with a text file. Non-offending files within the ZIP file would not be affected.
